Pole Barn Floor and Site Prep Done the Right Way

A lot of pole barns get built and then kind of just left to figure themselves out. The floor gets soft in spots, the doors drag, critters find their way in under the gap - and nobody gets around to fixing it until it's a real problem. That's exactly the kind of work we knocked out on this one.

We spread Class 5 inside the barn and ran a plate compactor over the whole floor to pack it down tight. Class 5 is a gravel-sand mix that compacts really well - it gives you a firm, stable surface that holds up under equipment and foot traffic without turning to mush. It's one of the best options for a barn floor that needs to be functional without the cost of concrete.

We also graded the exterior along both sides of the building. The ground around a pole barn matters more than people think. If it's not sloped right, water works its way in and starts softening things up from underneath. Getting the grade cleaned up around the perimeter helps the building drain the way it should.

Then there's the slider door. We set a timber at the base of the opening so the doors close flush and seal up the gap along the bottom. It's a small thing, but it keeps mice, chipmunks, and other critters from using your barn as a free apartment. The doors sit right, and the floor underneath them is solid.

The details are what make a building actually work for you long-term. A flat floor, proper drainage, and a door that shuts tight - that's what we're after on every job like this.
